When it comes to planning a themed party it helps to educate yourself on how and why things came to be. As a mom, I take these fun opportunities when I am educating myself to also educate my kiddos.

We all know what Mardi Gras is… when it comes to the party on bourbon street. Now as a mom I leave those are the small details out for my little ones. However. the what, where, how did it all start is what I love to teach.

So before I dive into the yumminess I want to share with you what I learned, to help you plan.

Quick Facts of Mardi Gras

  • In countries such as the United Kingdom, Mardi Gras is also known as Shrove Tuesday which is derived from the word shrive, meaning “confess.”
  • The French call it French Fat Tuesday. During Lent, many Christians fast and the name Fat Tuesday refers to the last day of eating richer food before the leaner days of Lent begin.
  • Many people start the day off with pancakes since it is considered a richer food. That is why it is also known as Pancake Day!
  • King Cakes, a type of cake that is a cross between a French pastry and a coffee cake. Its oval shape and has festive colors are only available during the festival
  • In many cultures, it is celebrated for two weeks.
  • The size of the beads matters far less than the color The Purple represents justice, the Green symbolizes faith and the Gold exemplifies power.

I do my best to teach my kids that there is always room to learn. Throwing a theme-based party or day is one of those opportunities to learn while having fun. Celebrate and learn others’ traditions and reasoning is something I hope you enjoy as much as I do.

If you do have a party keep it true and authentic to whatever you are celebrating, have fun, and be responsible. Please do not drink and drive.
