๐Ÿคฟ Florida Packing List: 25 Things to Bring That You Likely Havenโ€™t Thought Of!

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (3)

While our downloadable Florida checklist above has EVERYTHING you need to pack for Florida, letโ€™s face it, we all know to bring a swimsuit and toothbrush on vacation!

Rather than provide you with 101 things to pack, below are just the 25 things to bring to Florida that you might have forgotten, not yet thought of, or flat-out didnโ€™t know existed! These are some of our favorite travel items that we always have in our suitcase.

Traveling with kids? Weโ€™ve included six bonus items for packing for the family!

Wondering what to wear in Florida? We cover that below too ๐Ÿ˜‰

Heading to the theme parks? Weโ€™ve also got you covered!

๐Ÿงด 1. Reef-Safe Sunscreen

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (4)

Each year, 4,000 to 6,000 tons of sunscreen pollute our reefs. Help protect our reefs by ensuring you have reef-safe sunscreen.

We found it surprisingly difficult to find reef-safe sunscreen in stores in Florida. Make sure you buy yours in advance to help protect the aquatic life.

We recommendStream 2 Sea sunscreenas itโ€™s free from harmful chemicals, and its bottles are made from either sugarcane resin or recycled milk jugs.

Tidal Wave Mineral Sunscreen on Etsy also offers natural reef-safe SPF30 sunscreen, handmade in Florida. This is an excellent option for protecting your skin and the ocean while supporting a small business.

โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน 2. Mini First-Aid Kit

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (5)

We always pack amini first aid kitin our bag, just in case.

Whether you need a Band-Aid for a blister while walking around Disney or a Tylenol after one too many co*cktails in Miami, itโ€™s always helpful to have.

You never know when it may come in handy (particularly as Iโ€™m clumsy)!

๐Ÿ„๐Ÿพโ€โ™€๏ธ 3. Body Glide

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (6)

Letโ€™s face it, in the hot and humid weather in Florida, sticky, sweaty skin likes to rub togetherโ€ฆ particularly thighs!

Body Glide is a game-changer and will make a welcome addition to your Florida packing list. Originally designed for surfers in California, the anti-chafing balm prevents friction on the skin.

Itโ€™s also great for preventing blisters on your feet, just apply some before putting on your socks and shoes.

You can also find a 100% biodegradable, handmade anti-chafing stick on Etsy.

๐ŸฆŸ 4. Insect Repellent

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (7)

If youโ€™re a bug magnet, like me, youโ€™ll absolutely want to pack some insect repellent for Florida.

I spent a long time researching the best DEET-free insect repellent and landed on Repel Lemon Eucalyptus Insect Repellent.

It is now my go-to and a firm addition to my packing list! I love that it is non-toxic, yet it is still effective.

๐Ÿฅต 5. Chilly Pad Cooling Towel

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (8)

Beat the Florida heat with a chilly pad cooling towel. These are a game-changer, particularly if waiting in line at theme parks.

Simply wet the towel to activate it, cooling it by up to 30 degrees, then place it on your neck, arms, or anywhere thatโ€™s feeling a bit hot!

The super-absorbent material remains dry to the touch while providing cooling relief.

These were recommended to us by a family member while at a soccer game in the middle of the summerโ€ฆ and now we donโ€™t go anywhere warm without them!

๐Ÿ’ฆ 6. Handheld Misting Fan

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (9)

A handheld misting fan can make a world of difference in helping you enjoy your time in the heat.

Small and easy to pack, these fans provide a glorious mist to cool you down. We recommend a fan with a rechargeable battery so you donโ€™t have to carry spare batteries or buy them on the go.

These are always a hit with kids, helping to keep them comfortable and providing them with something to play with all in one!

Just make sure you pack one per person. Otherwise, you may find some fights over it!

โญ๏ธ Pro tip: Make sure you buy yours in advance. Misting fans sell for around $30 per fan and are of lesser quality in Disney and other parks.

๐Ÿ“ฑ 7. Waterproof Phone Case

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (10)

Even if your phone is waterproof, you should include a waterproof phone case on your Florida packing list!

A waterproof phone case will help protect your phone on the beach, by the pool, on boat rides, and splash rides at the parks.

Itโ€™s also great for storing cash, documents, credit cards, etc., that you need to take but donโ€™t want to get wet!

๐Ÿ›Ÿ 8. Flotation Strap

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (11)

Phone overboard!!

While the waterproof phone case will protect your phone, it will still sink if dropped into the water!

Ensure your phone or waterproof camera stays afloat with a flotation strap in case of a drop.

๐Ÿ’„ 9. Reef-Safe SPF Lip Balm

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (12)

Itโ€™s easy to overlook packing SPF lip balm, but sore, sunburned lips are not a fun way to start your Florida vacation!

As with your sunscreen, ensure you choose a reef-safe option.

This SPF50 lip balm on Etsy is entirely natural and organic and produced in the USA by a small business.

โ›ต๏ธ 10. Motion Sickness Bands

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (13)

If youโ€™re susceptible to motion sickness, like I am, you will want to bring some acupressure wristbands.

Whether exploring the Florida Keys on a snorkel boat tour or enjoying the thrill of the theme parks in Orlando, theyโ€™ll come in handy!

Rootโ€™d wristbands are the most effective Iโ€™ve found and are nicer looking than most.

If you prefer a motion sickness tablet, then Bonine is what I use. Our dive instructor friend recommended it as itโ€™s less drowsy than Dramamine.

๐Ÿ– 11. Quick-Dry, Sand-Resistant Beach Towel
(with Hidden Zipper Pocket)

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (14)

If you have never used a travel towel, they are life-changing for beach days!

The material repels sand rather than collecting it, so it doesnโ€™t end up everywhere. It also packs small and dries quickly.

This Turkish towel is 100% cotton, sand-resistant, quick-drying, and even has a secret zipper pocket to hide away your phone and keys.

Alternatively, this oversized beach blanket is perfect for packing for the family. Made from parachute nylon, it is also quick-dry, sand-resistant, and has zipper pockets, plus anchors to secure it.

๐Ÿคฟ 12. Snorkel Gear

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (15)

If you plan on doing a lot of snorkeling while in Florida, it is cheaper and easier to bring your own snorkel gear than renting it each day.

Pack your own and be ready to jump in the water any time! Theyโ€™re also great fun for kids in the pool.

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (16)

๐Ÿ“ธ 13. Underwater Camera

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (17)

An underwater camera is an excellent addition to your Florida packing list.

Whether coming face-to-face with manatees in Crystal River, exploring the coral reef at the Florida Keys, or riding Splash Mountain at Disney, make sure you capture these once-in-a-lifetime moments.

Yes, you could use your phone in a waterproof case. However, if the case fails, you risk damage to your phone, which could destroy everything you have on it!

There are various underwater cameras to choose from, depending on your level and interest in photography. However, the GoPro, or similar adventure cameras, are small, easy to use, and reasonably priced.

๐Ÿ  14. Underwater Dome GoPro Housing

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (18)

An underwater dome housing allows you to capture photos with part of the frame above water and part underwater.

This inexpensive item allows for a lot of creativity and is probably one of the things we had the most fun with in Florida.

Just make sure you order one for the correct GoPro model.

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (19)

๐ŸŽถ 15. Waterproof Portable Bluetooth Speaker

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (20)

Listen to your favorite songs on the beach, by the pool, or on your hotel balcony with a portable Bluetooth speaker.

After returning several, we finally found โ€œthe oneโ€ with the Soundcore 2 by Anker.

It is among the most affordable options, the sound quality is excellent, and it provides 24 hours of playback battery life.

It is also waterproof, so you can enjoy music wherever you go in Florida!

๐Ÿ”‹ 16. Portable Cell Phone Charger

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (21)

Youโ€™ll likely use your phone to navigate, take photos, and more! Bring apower packto keep your phone charged on the go.

Thisportable charger by Ankeris the one I use as it offers wireless, USB, and USB-C charging.

However, it doesnโ€™t work with iPhone 15 models. Therefore, Iโ€™d recommendthis oneinstead for any users of the newer phones.

This is now a must-have on any packing list!

๐ŸŽ’ 17. Dry Bag

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (22)

An inexpensive dry bag is an invaluable item when packing for Florida.

Not only does it keep your belongings dry while on the beach, kayaking, or on boat tours, but it also floats!

So, if it takes a spill overboard, your things will remain dry and easy to retrieve.

The great thing about this dry bag is that it also comes with a waterproof phone case, so you get two for the price of one!

๐ŸŒง 18. Rain Poncho

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (23)

During the rainy season, rain can be sudden and very heavy. If youโ€™re vacationing in Florida during this time, it is well worth having a poncho with you.

A poncho is better than a rain jacket as it can also cover your bags and any other belongings with you.

It is also a great thing to pack for Disney for the splash rides, allowing you to keep your clothes and bags dry.

You can expect to spend around $12 for a disposable rain poncho in Disney, so itโ€™s worth bringing your own.

โ„๏ธ 19. Backpack Cooler

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (24)

Whether you want to keep your food and drink cold on the beach, in the car, or while hitting the theme parks, a cooler is a must on your Florida packing checklist!

After much research, I chose this backpack cooler as the leakproof interior also doubles as a waterproof dry bag, making it super versatile!

The backpack design also makes it a lot more comfortable to carry around.

๐Ÿšฐ 20. Reusable Water Bottle

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (25)

Remain hydrated in Florida without wasting single-use plastic bottles.

We love these reusable bottles as they come in various colors and sizes, and keep your drinks cold for 24 hours (or hot for 12 hours โ€“ but thatโ€™s less useful in Florida!).

If you donโ€™t mind your water not staying cold, these collapsible reusable bottles are a great option for saving space in your suitcase.

โญ๏ธ Pro tip: All the Florida theme parks have drinking fountains to refill water bottles.

โ˜€๏ธ 21. Long Sleeved Rash Guard

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (26)

If you sunburn easily or have many water activities planned, such as snorkeling, kayaking, etc., youโ€™ll want to pack a rash guard or long-sleeved swimsuit.

With a 50+ SPF it will provide protection from the sun so you can use less sunscreen.

Theyโ€™re also great for kids, particularly when out all day at the theme parks, and save you from having to chase them around so often to reapply sunscreen!

Personally, I have three of these long-sleeved swimsuits and absolutely love them!

โœˆ๏ธ 22. Travel Adapter

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (27)

The powerplugsand sockets in Florida are type A and B, the same as elsewhere in the USA.

If youโ€™re visiting Florida from the States, then you wonโ€™t need an adapter. However, if youโ€™re traveling internationally to Florida, make sure you pack a travel adapter.

We prefer a universal travel adapter as you can use them everywhere so youโ€™re guaranteed to always have the right one in your bag!

๐Ÿ“˜ 23. Waterproof Kindle

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (28)

Thereโ€™s nothing better than sitting by the pool or on the beach and getting lost in a book. The Kindle Paperwhite allows you to do just that without having to pack bulky books.

It is also waterproof, so you can enjoy your favorite book by the water without worry.

This waterproof case is great for adding protection for those of you who have non-waterproof e-readers.

Finally, sign up for a Kindle Unlimited 30 day free trial before you go to make the most of access to over 2 million books.

๐Ÿงณ 24. Compression Packing Cubes

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (29)

These compression packing cubes by Well Traveled are the ultimate packing hack. When it comes time to pack your suitcase for Florida, you will absolutely want to use them.

As well as keeping your clothes organized, theyโ€™re a time saver. Ready to hit the beach as soon as you arrive? Donโ€™t waste time digging around in your suitcase; simply pull out the cube with your swimwear and youโ€™re ready to go!

The compression ability is also great for maximizing your space.

Weโ€™ve used many different brands of packing cubes, but none have matched the quality and functionality of Well Traveled.

โญ๏ธ Pro tip: If youโ€™re packing for the family, we recommend getting different colored cubes for each family member.

๐Ÿ“„ 25. Travel Insurance

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (30)

I highly recommend getting travel insurance, even if youโ€™re a US resident.

Not only can it cover medical emergencies but also unforeseen circ*mstances such as trip cancelation, missing bags, natural disasters, or stolen goods.

Always read your policy carefully when booking travel insurance to ensure you have one that suits your needs.

๐Ÿž Bonus: National Parks Pass

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (31)

If you are planning on visiting any of the Everglades or Biscayne NP then it is worth packing your Annual National Parks Pass.

If you donโ€™t already own a pass and only plan to visit one or two National Parks in a year, it may not be worth purchasing. However, if you visit three or more parks it will save you money.

With that said, if you plan on visiting the parks via a tour, such as Dry Tortugas, you will not need your pass.

๐Ÿฅฅ Pro Tip: Leave Some Empty Space

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (32)

When packing for Florida make sure you leave some empty space in your suitcase!

Youโ€™ll undoubtedly want to bring home some souvenirs to remember your vacation and you want to make sure you have the space to do so.

Not got your suitcase yet? Check out our Level8 luggage review.

๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿฝ Florida Packing List for Kids

While most parents will have all the obvious things ready for a family vacation in Florida, here are a few things to pack for Florida that you may not yet have considered.

๐Ÿ“ท 1. Waterproof Kids Camera

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (33)

This waterproof camera comes in a robust, drop-proof case designed for kids aged 3+.

Not only does it help to keep the little ones entertained, but it also allows them to capture and treasure their own vacation memories.

๐Ÿ““ 2. Kids Travel Journal

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (34)

Get the kids excited before the trip and keep them engaged throughout with this travel journal.

It is full of fun prompts and activities and has space for four trips.

It is ideal for keeping them occupied on the plane and while out at restaurants.

This Florida travel activity book and journal also comes highly recommended, full of fun facts about Florida and specific activities for the islands.

๐Ÿ’ก 3. Night Light

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (35)

Sleeping in a new place can be tricky, even for the older family members.

A night light can help the little ones feel secure, while also making it easier to navigate new surroundings at night.

๐Ÿชฃ 4. Collapsible Buckets

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (36)

Is there anything more quintessentially reminiscent of a beach vacation than building sandcastles?!

These collapsible buckets make it easy to pack these favorite beach toys.

โญ๏ธ Pro tip: Some hotels and resorts will provide beach toys for kids, so call in advance. We also spotted free-to-borrow kidsโ€™ toys at John Pennekamp State Park.

๐ŸŒŠ 5. Inflatable Arm Bands

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (37)

While puddle jumpers are great, they are bulky to pack. Instead, consider a pair of inflatable armbands.

โญ๏ธ Pro tip: Check first with your accommodation as they may provide life vests or floaties for children.

๐Ÿงฉ 6. Travel Games

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (38)

If youโ€™re traveling to Florida with kids, make sure you pack at least one or two travel games.

These will prove invaluable whether on the plane, in the hotel room, in the car, or at a restaurant.

Some great options include:

๐Ÿฐ Packing for Disney

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (39)

If youโ€™re visiting Florida for the thrills of the many theme parks, then thereโ€™s a few additional items you may want to consider packing.

While it is possible to buy most things in the parks, they typically come with a much higher price tag.

Additionally, youโ€™ll be doing plenty of waiting in line for rides so the last thing youโ€™ll want to do is wait in line at a shop as well!

Below are a few of our favorite things to help make your time in Disney even more enjoyable:

  • Autograph book & sharpie: Collect the autographs of all your favorite characters.
  • Download Disney app: Use their app to navigate the park and check wait times.
  • Glow sticks: These are great fun (and make spotting the kids easier) after dark.
  • Day pack: Bring a small backpack to carry your essentials in the parks.
  • Childrenโ€™s Safety ID Wristbands: Have added peace of mind in crowded parks.
  • Hand sanitizer: Good for big and little hands after rides and before eating.
  • Theme park tickets: Donโ€™t forget to ensure you have a copy with you.
  • Extra clothes: Youโ€™ll likely get hot and sweaty walking around and may wish to change clothes during the day.

๐Ÿ‘™ What to Wear in Florida

๐ŸŒฆ Weather in Florida

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (41)

While Florida is known for its hot weather, it still sees seasonal variances with cooler temperatures in the winter months.

Regardless of when you visit Florida, it is worth bringing a sweater as youโ€™ll find many indoor venues are very chilly with air conditioning running at full blast!

The summer months from late May through to October are typically in the mid 80s-90s (30-35ยฐc), but feel more like 100ยฐF (38ยฐc).

Additionally, it is very humid and the summer is also the rainy season. During this time it is common for sudden torrential downpours. Although with that said, this is usually pretty refreshing!

The weather in the winter months (Nov-Mar), is typically more ideal with average lows of around 50-67ยฐF (10-19ยฐc) and highs of around 70-80ยฐF (21-27ยฐc).

โญ๏ธ Pro tip: Wear your sweater on the plane to save space in your suitcase. Plus the plane is usually on the cooler side!

๐Ÿ‘— Fashion in Florida

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (42)

With the exception of Miami, when it comes to what to wear in Florida youโ€™ll want to think casual, laidback vibes!

Orlando caters to families and as such is extremely informal, with most restaurants having only the most basic dress code.

Similarly, the Florida Keys are very relaxed with their chill Caribbean vibes.

Conversely, if youโ€™re planning on hitting the bar scene in Miami youโ€™ll want to dress to impress!

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (43)

During the day, swimwear (with a cover-up available) plus shorts, t-shirts, sundresses, and flip flops are the most you could need.

If youโ€™re visiting the theme parks, you may want to also pack some activewear and comfortable shoes.

In the evening, you may want something a little dressier. However, weโ€™re talking flowy sundresses and sandals, or a button-up short-sleeved shirt with shorts. Nothing too fancy!

Leave the high-heels, suit jackets, and accessories at home!

๐Ÿงณ Baggage Allowance for Florida

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (60)

The luggage allowances for Florida will differ based on the airline youโ€™ve chosen, your ticket, and where youโ€™re flying from.

Some cheaper, economy fares will not include checked luggage and may limit carry-on luggage to one personal item.

Conversely, business and first-class fares may include multiple checked bags with a higher weight allowance.

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (61)

Regardless of whether you plan to travel with only carry-on or checked bags, we recommend investing in high-quality luggage as it will protect your precious belongings while traveling. We personally always travel with our Level 8 luggage.

You can learn more about it in our Level8 luggage review.

Checked Luggage

Checked luggage typically has a maximum weight and dimensions allowance:

  • Maximum Weight: Up to 50lbs (23kg)
  • Maximum Dimensions (length + width + height): 62 linear inches (157 cm)

Ensure you weigh your bags prior to traveling to avoid extra charges. You can do this with an inexpensive suitcase weight scale.

Alternatively, if you have bathroom scales, weigh yourself with your suitcase, then just yourself. Deduct your weight from the combined weight to work out the weight of your suitcase.

Carry On Luggage

Airlines also restrict the size of carry-on luggage to ensure it fits safely under the seat in front of you or in an overhead compartment. The dimensions for these are standard across most airlines and include the wheels and handles:

  • Maximum Dimensions: 22โ€ x 14โ€ x 9โ€ (56cm x 36cm x 23cm)

If your bag exceeds the required dimensions you may be required to pay to check the bag. Many airlines do not readily disclose a maximum weight limit for carry-on luggage. However, carry-on bags are typically limited to 22-25 pounds (10-11 kg).

Most airlines will also allow one personal item, such as a purse, briefcase, or laptop bag. The dimensions for these are not always defined, although for United Airlines these dimensions are 9 inches x 10 inches x 17 inches (22 cm x 25 cm x 43 cm), to give you a rough size.

๐Ÿ“ƒ Essential Travel Documents

๐Ÿ Printable Florida Packing List: Essentials + Overlooked Items (2024) (62)
